PLANNED GIVING
Personal Donor Stories
Len Sargent
Len Sargent, outstanding Taft master and coach from 1937–1969, made a bequest from his estate to establish The Leonard R. Sargent Memorial Chair in Environmental Studies.
His original $1 million bequest received in 1997 has since been augmented by almost $800,000 because of Taft's percentage interest in the remainder of his estate.
Citing the Sargent Chair as the driving force for study in environmental science at Taft, Headmaster, Lance Odden recalled, "Len Sargent loved working with students, and the outdoors was his favorite classroom. Known as 'The Winter God,' he would often take his hockey teams to skate on a pond to have a great outing in nature. He will always be remembered for his devotion to young people and for all that he taught them as a pioneer in preserving our land and wildlife.
"Len's commitment to Taft confirms his belief in the future, just as it challenges our students as they seek ways to preserve the kind of world he so deeply cherished."
